January's MONTHLY MANTRA: "Purge the Clutter."
The beginning of any new year is the perfect time to clean the clutter out of your life. Clutter blocks your energy and stifles creativity and by purging what you
no longer need, you can clear your mind, refresh your spirit, renew your environment, and awaken yourself into a whole new world.
Katherine Gibson, in her book Unclutter Your Life, Transforming Your Physical, Mental, and Emotional Space, posits that physical clutter are the possessions in our world that do not have a
purpose, do not reflect who we are, and do not enhance our lives aesthetically or spiritually. Mental clutter, she writes, is comprised of
expectations, distractions, and obligations that affect our peace of mind. What is defined as emotional
clutter includes unfulfilling activities and self-defeating thoughts and feelings that keep us from our highest potential.
In consideration of a recent U.S. News and World Report article that we spend one year of our lives looking
for lost or misplaced items at home and in the office, let's start off the new year by taking some clutter out
of our physical world, our mental world, and our emotional world and in doing so, as poet Douglas Mallock once wrote, "Find your joy in something finished, not a thousand things begun."
