July's Monthly Mantra: I AM FREE TO LOVE. I AM FREE TO HEAL.
In mid-June we were notified by the Chopra Center family that David Simon, M.D., center cofounder, pioneer in mind-body medicine,
board-certified neurologist, and award-winning author on health, spirituality and conscious living, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. (Good news, though: as of today, he is accepting life as
"unfolding perfectly" and is beginning post-surgery medical treatments.) Immediately my thoughts went to, "What is going on in this world?"
This is a well respected, world-renowned doctor, I thought, who writes about how to heal the physical body and he helps millions around the world through workshops and programs to find and transform through
peace of mind, physical balance, and emotional healing and with his knowledge integrates the very best of the Eastern healing arts with the best of Western modern medicine
and clearly he practices what he preaches. How can this be? Along with his feelings of sadness he acknowledged an overwhelming sense of tremendous gratitude,
appreciation, peace and love and then he requested that we could lend our support to him--by telling the
people in our lives that we love them. Wow, I thought, what a selfless request during such a devastating
time. In Dr. David's words, "Life is so delicate and precious. Take advantage of this opportunity to express
your love and gratitude to all who will listen." These are words echoed in his 2009 book, "Free to Love, Free to Heal," written to support the awakening that can occur when we begin to think and act free from the encumbrances that cause us to doubt we are unconditionally
lovable. What a great message. What a great book. Even with this rather challenging and mysterious twist from the universe, Dr. David's request of us to return him to
well-being and to his mission of teaching, healing, and inspiration included a simple wish: love more. We could honor his life work about the sacredness of physical
existence by working toward the hope of unconditional love. While there might be those in our lives, he acknowledges, that choose to reject our expressions of love and gratitude,
there are certainly multitudes more that will not. As divine beings filled with unconditional love, there is enough divinity within us to allow our expressions to flow
effortlessly to everyone. If complicated life obstacles, challenging family dynamics, disruptive households, or
awkward relationships prevent us from being able to share the love that is fundamental to our healing, we can give it away freely anyhow. It is our birthright as a being of love to
experience nourishing, nurturing, and healing relationships with those who know that life is too short to allow misunderstandings, violations, and
disappointments of the past to dictate our courses moving forward. Be free to love. Be free to heal are messages in Dr. David's life's works. I can
do my part to love and to heal. We can do our part to love and to heal. And in this delicate and sad and rich and blissful and wonderful and prayerful and
supportive time, let us carry him by honoring his wishes of working together to love more, to heal more, and to be happy. What a great message. What a great guy. Our prayers are with you, Dr. David!

"Do not allow the pervasive worldly demands of life to constrict your heart. The sun does not use the excuse of clouds to stop shining its light, for it knows that clouds will always come and go.
It is your birthright to live a life abundant in love. Make the commitment today to open your heart and let your love flow. No matter what has happened in your past,
you have an infinite capacity for love. Please use it, for your own sake and the sake of this precious world." ~David Simon, M.D.
