Our egoic minds thrive on looking into our past as well as into our future to help us react to situations based on those thought
patterns. Life may feel harsh, you may be hurt by someone, or perhaps something negative has happened that you did not anticipate. By consciously connecting only to the present moment, however, we let go of
painful memories or fearful futures that our ego/mind survives on and we achieve a level of happiness, calm and peace we can only experience by living in that state of awareness. It is impossible for the
mind to work from our past or project into our future during a state of conscious mindfulness to the present. Author Pema Chodron says to acknowledge when you're triggered by something and pause. Pausing
brings you to the present. Take 3-5 conscious, deep breaths. You should feel an altered "shift" take place; the "shift" indicates you have changed your vibrational frequency. Chodron says, "Develop the
intelligence to know that nothing shifting will give you what you have always gotten." With the concentration on the pause and the breath, the focus is off of the mind wandering to other things that will
dictate your action or reaction. It is hard not to be dysfunctional in a world where the acceleration of evolutionary change is so fast. We can follow the wisdom of the teachings and still have
difficulty, because we are human. Life can be taxing but when we have done our best—and living consciously will help get us there—we should wait the result in peace.
